Matsumoto Jun will be playing the role of Matsudaira Katamori, the lord of the Aizu domain who was a "charismatic figure of the late Edo period" and sacrificed his life for the times with his convictions and resolve!
The drama "Chirururan Shinsengumi Requiem" will be broadcast on terrestrial TV on TBS for two consecutive nights on Thursday, March 26th and Friday, March 27th, with the special drama "Edo Youth Arc" streaming on U-NEXT after each night's broadcast. In addition, the drama series "Kyoto Decisive Battle Arc," which depicts the events that follow, will be exclusively streamed on U-NEXT, with new episodes being released every Friday. This time, the final cast announcement before the broadcast has been made, announcing that Matsumoto Jun will be appearing.

The manga is drawn by Hashimoto Eiji, known for his powerful touch and overwhelming artistic ability, and the original story is by Umemura Shinya, who is also known for Record of Ragnarok. Set in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period, this is the first live-action adaptation of the popular comic Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem, which depicts the rough yet passionate way of life of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, with flashy action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts.
The protagonist, Hijikata Toshizou, will be played by Yamada Yuki, while the other Shinsengumi patriots will be played by a cast of young, talented actors with strong personalities and talents, including Suzuki Nobuyuki, Nakamura Aoi, Hosoda Kaito, Uesugi Shuhei, Fujiwara Kisetsu, Sugino Yosuke, Yanagi Shuntaro, Miyazaki Akito, and Iwanaga Hihio. It has also been announced that Nakajima Kento will play Okada Izo, known as "Izo the Assassin," Hijikata's sworn enemy, and Ayano Go will play Serizawa Kamo, the "strongest and most evil nemesis" who stands in the way of Hijikata and his men.
And now, with the broadcast just one month away, one of the biggest surprises of the series is the announcement that Matsumoto Jun, who has always been at the forefront of Japanese entertainment, will be playing the role of Matsudaira Katamori, the legendary lord of the Aizu domain who created the Shinsengumi and to whom they remained loyal until the end.
Matsumoto Jun plays Matsudaira Katamori, the "charismatic figure of the late Edo period" and lord of the Aizu domain who died for his time!
In this film, Matsumoto plays Matsudaira Katamori, portraying him as a wise ruler who, despite sensing the fate of the shogunate's demise, boldly accepted the position of Kyoto protector. As the "last bulwark" of the Edo shogunate, which had lasted for over 200 years, he was portrayed as a wise ruler who remained true to his beliefs and remained unswayed by the times. He welcomed Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizō, who were merely a group of ronin, and officially entrusted them with maintaining public order in Kyoto. To his soldiers, he was their absolute lord and spiritual pillar. From the moment they met Matsudaira Katamori, Hijikata and the other members of the Shieikan were captivated by his convictions, determination, and generosity, and they grew and changed their destinies. He was also highly regarded by Serizawa Kamo, Hijikata's greatest enemy, and Katamori himself recognized Serizawa, accepting both good and bad, and becoming close to him. He truly was a "charismatic figure of the late Edo period."
How did Toshizo Hijikata meet the talented Kondo Isami and, together with his comrades with strong personalities such as Soji Okita and Hajime Saito, create the Shinsengumi, a group that will go down in history? His encounters with characters like Izo Okada, Shinbei Tanaka, Kamo Serizawa, and Katamori Matsudaira, who will become his allies, sworn enemies, and lords, will set the times in motion.
They questioned the meaning of their lives during a time of great change, and lived short but vivid lives with a burning passion that even made them risk their lives. This is the story of their lives and their demise, a story where friendship, betrayal, and beliefs intersect. It is told with modern, elegant, and charming characters and high-speed sword fighting that is said to be the fastest in history. Look forward to this "Japanese sword action entertainment"!
This is the first time we've seen a character movie that exudes an overwhelming aura that will captivate everyone who sees it!
A character video of Matsudaira Katamori, played by Matsumoto, has been released. The "charismatic figure of modern entertainment," Matsumoto Jun, dramatically embodies Matsudaira Katamori, a "charismatic figure of the end of the Edo period" who possesses both the dignity of a feudal lord and the sharp fighting spirit he sometimes displays, exuding an overwhelming aura that makes even the rough-and-tumble men, including Hijikata, feel they cannot compete with him. Be sure to check it out before the main film begins to see how Matsumoto Jun, the "charismatic figure of modern entertainment," dramatically embodies this character.
From the Warring States period to the end of the Edo period. Yamada Yuki x Matsumoto Jun, the timeless master-servant relationship, once again
Another highlight is the passionate yet heartbreaking "resonance of souls" between Yamada Yuki and Matsumoto Jun. In the NHK Taiga drama "What Will Ieyasu Do?", the pair played their lord Tokugawa Ieyasu and his strongest vassal Honda Tadakatsu, who continued to protect Ieyasu's back throughout his life. This strongest duo, who survived the Sengoku period together, will once again meet in this production at the turning point of the era, the end of the Edo period. Matsumoto said of Yamada, "I was looking forward to acting with him again. His acting is very captivating and he is an inspiring person, so it's fun to work with him, and I'm honestly happy to be able to appear in such an exciting production with him as the lead. I'm also looking forward to this
There's so much that my seniors have done for me up until now, so I thought a lot about what I could do this time, and I hope to be of some help." Yamada and Matsumoto's timeless master-servant relationship and their reunion are sure to be a highlight.
With less than two months until the broadcast, the full picture of "Chirururan: Shinsengumi Requiem" is gradually becoming clear. As many people are eagerly awaiting the broadcast, we plan to continue announcing plans to allow viewers to enjoy the world of the work even more before the broadcast.
■Comments
I think there have been many works based on the Shinsengumi up until now, and I'm sure there will be more to come, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of entertainment this "Chirururan" will become.
The word "tagiru" (to boil) appears frequently in the script, and I think there is something very moving about the way the people who lived during the end of the Edo period lived their lives burning with passion.
I hope to deliver a passionate performance together with Yamada-kun and the other members of the Shinsengumi.
Why did the Shinsengumi, a group of rough and tumble individuals with unique personalities, remain loyal to the end?
We needed an actor who could play the role of Matsudaira Katamori with equal ability, whose presence, spirit, and way of life prove why.
The moment Matsumoto Jun appeared on set, the atmosphere on set changed completely. There was no doubt that the "Lord of Aizu" was there.
Matsumoto's overwhelming presence and the fighting spirit behind it became the backbone of this story.
The heartfelt respect and trembling empathy shown by Hijikata Toshizo, played by Yamada Yuki, when he confronted Lord Katamori, played by Matsumoto. This was deeply engraved in the souls of not only the two of them, but all the staff and cast, and I believe it became the guideline for creating the work "Chirururan."
