It all started with my desire to reciprocate the feelings that Yuki Yamada had expressed, but when I got to the set, I realized that this was a team deeply connected to the relationships I've built throughout my life as an actor. Seeing Yuki standing in the center as Toshizo Hijikata, he seemed like an elusive anomaly standing in the way of the straightforward Hijikata and his men, and I simply thought, "I just need to destroy this thing," and I'm truly happy that I was able to face this situation at this time. Shinsaku Takasugi is a "monster" who moves the world not with brute force, but with the power of words and his intellect. I hope that his mysterious charm, which seems to devour people's hearts, comes across.

I couldn't imagine anyone other than Takumi Kitamura, with whom I've fought alongside before, being entrusted with this role. When Kitamura appeared on set, he was the very embodiment of Takasugi Shinsaku, the solitary genius who enjoys the sound of an era ending all by himself and tries to break the monotony. His confrontation with Yuki Yamada, who plays Hijikata Toshizo, was incredibly thrilling.
